Android is often praised for its huge customization options. And while standard Android does a great job of allowing you to customize your operating system to your liking, third-party apps make it even easier to customize your Android phone. Whether you automate tedious tasks or completely change the way your home screens look, there are some great customization apps available on Android.

A new launcher: Nova launcher

Third-party launchers are great for adding more options and features to Android, and Nova Launcher is one of the best around. Nova has a strong focus on adding more adaptation to the home screen along with some general improvements to the quality of life. You can edit the grid size on the Home screen, adjust the shape icons, use custom icons, customize the app drawer with different visual options and much more.

And it’s just the free version in the Google Play Store, if you buy Nova Launcher Prime for a one-time price of $ 4.99, you also get customizable gesture commands, folders in the app drawer and even more visual options like unread tags. Nova Launcher lets you fine-tune Android to your liking, while still maintaining a stocky Android feel.

On top of a launcher: Icon packs

Icon packs require the use of a compatible third-party launcher (like Nova) to work, but they are a great way to customize the visual aspects of Android. Most icon packs are very stylized, so much of it will be up to your preferences. But whether you prefer packages like the minimalist style Flight or something more fun and cartoonish like the Crayon Icon Pack, there is certainly an iconic package out there for you.

Automation: Bags

Bags is a powerful app that allows you to automate various tasks on Android. You can assign specific actions, whether it is sending a text or muting the phone, to happen based on time, position and other “triggers”.

But it only scratches the surface, as Tasker announces over 350 actions that can be automated in the app. Third-party developers can also create their own plugins. This allows third-party apps to be integrated into Tasker, which means you can automate actions in those apps. (A full list of third-party plugins is available on Tasker’s website.)

Bags opens many doors for you, and when it comes to automation on Android, it’s the best of the best. You can buy Bags at a one-time price of $ 3.49.

Whether you want to see the calendar, time or map, KWGT gives you the freedom to create widgets in your own style through the app. Color, shapes, text and more are entirely up to you, so you can easily spend a lot of time diving deep into the app’s editor or creating something very basic that just gets the job done.

KWGT is free to use, but if you want to get rid of ads, you need the premium version, which costs $ 4.49.

There are many wallpapers in the Play Store, but if you want something completely unique, you have to merge your own. From the same devices behind KWGT, KLWP is an Android app that gives you many options for creating your own live wallpapers. You can mix and match different gradations, animations and 3D shapes to create a personalized live wallpaper of your choice. You can even incorporate useful things like watches and Google Fitness information as part of the background.

KLWP is free to use, but if you want to get rid of ads, you need the pro version which costs $ 4.49.

Appearance and sound: ZEDGE

You get access to a massive library of wallpapers, ringtones and alert sounds with ZEDGE. The benefits here are obvious, but it’s great to have a one-stop shop with so many options available directly from your Android device. The app itself is free to download, but some content must be purchased individually. If you sign up for ZEDGE Premium (which is just another type of account), you can even sell your own content on the app, with ZEDGE taking a 30% cut on all sales.

ZEDGE is completely free, as is the premium account.

A new context menu: MIUI-ify

The Android drop-down menu is useful for reading alerts and tapping quick settings, but what if it was more customizable? This is what MIUI-ify offers: A brand new pop-up menu for alerts and settings that is completely customizable, both visually and functionally.

You can add shortcuts for apps and sliders for volume, brightness and alarms. You can adjust colors, icon shapes and even the blurred background when the menu is open, so you can stay focused. This pop-up menu also opens from the bottom, so you can still keep the default Android menu while using it.

MIUI-ify is a free app, but if you want to unlock more visual customization options like custom photos and climbs, you have to buy Premium in the app for $ 2.49.

Better volume controls: volume styles

While it’s unlikely you’ll ever find the standard volume slider on Android limiting, the Volume Styles app lets you customize them like never before. This app not only lets you change what the volume sliders look like, but also lets you add new sliders such as screen brightness, as well as shortcuts like a screenshot button or a flashlight.

Volume Styles is a free app, but if you want to unlock some of the flashy visual styles and remove ads, you’ll need to purchase Premium through an IAP for $ 1.99.
