Today, Apple announced that the latest versions of most of the major OS platforms will be released tomorrow, September 16th. This includes:

  • iOS 14
  • iPadOS 14
  • watchOS 7
  • tvOS 14

macOS Big Sur was not mentioned, and it is expected to come out later this year with Apple Silicon Macs.

I do not remember ever having such a short processing time from the announcement of OS release dates to the OS versions. Normally, after a September event, Apple launches GM versions of the OS updates and the public versions a week or two later. This year there is no such delay.

Until now, developers have not yet been able to submit their app updates to the App Review, so when iOS 1

4 introduces home screen widgets, for example, there will be no third-party widgets available to try yet. It’s a very unusual release strategy for Apple, but in a year like this it looks like anything can happen.
