Apple Launches Vintage Repair Pilots to Fix Aging iPhones, MacBooks and More



Apple introduces a new "Repair Vintage Apple Products Pilot" program that will lengthen the period customers can get repairs for older devices, according to sources familiar with the initiative. The new program will initially include iPhone 5 and other Apple products that are becoming outdated and in the coming weeks will add more products to the list of devices that previously lost the repair support.

Note, the list also includes 5+ year old Mid-2012 MacBook Air models after the introduction of an updated MacBook Air at the company's event earlier this week.

The complete list of devices that now fall under Apple's new program includes:

  • MacBook Air (11 inch, mid 2012 )
  • MacBook Air (13 inches, mid 2012)
  • iMac) – USA and Turkey only
  • iMac (27 inches, mid 2011) – US only and Turkey

Apple will soon add more devices including iPhone 4 and MacBook Pro (15 inch, Mid 2012) 30, 2018. It will be followed by MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, late 2012), MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, early 2013) , MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac Pro (Mid 2012) and iPhone 5 (GSM) on December 30, 2018. The program covers the devices at Apple stores and authorized service providers worldwide, unless otherwise stated. [19659002] Apple has long had a lifespan of 5-7 years to repair its products, which means that iPhone, iPad, or Mac owners may have repairs performed through Apple or an authorized service provider, even when they are not under warranty . The products are usually classified after 5-7 years as "vintage" or "outdated" (depending on country and local laws) and Apple employees no longer offer parts or repairs. The company maintains a list of products classified as vintage and outdated on its website.

For the new Pilot program, Apple will only offer repairs for vintage devices based on availability. Otherwise, customers will be told that inventory is not available because the product is considered vintage. So the new program does not guarantee you a fix, but it's a nice change from Apple's previous policy, where it stopped offering repairs just after classifying devices like vintage.
