According to a new report, Apple will switch from an OLED panel in Apple Watch as early as 2020.
Economic Daily News reports this week that Apple is currently in ongoing calls with display manufacturers in Taiwan to deliver microLED panels for Apple Watch beginning in 2020. Right now, Apple is using an OLED panel manufactured by LG, so this would be a big shift for the company if this report sticks out. As a quick update: microLED changes the technology behind the display panel to reduce power consumption, lighten the screen and allow devices to become even thinner.
At this time, Apple's switch to microLED has been rumored off-and-on for many years now. There have been rumors that Apple is planning to adopt microLED monitors in Apple Watch first, with some years running before the same technology is put into larger iPhone screens.
However, nothing is confirmed yet. If this latest report turns out to be true, we should start hearing more about the microLED technology in the coming months, long before Apple comes around to officially announce something by the end of 2020.
What do you think about this reputation change ? The OLED panel on Apple Watch is already quite amazing, but the benefits MicroLED offers may be too good for Apple to pass. Would you prefer it if your company stuck with OLED monitors?
