As threatened, Apple has now closed Epic Games’ developer account

As it had been threatened last week, Apple has now removed the developer account of Epic Games, and prevented anyone from downloading any of their games from the App Store. This includes not only Fortnite – which was already removed from the App Store – but also the entire Epic Games library.

This move was threatened last week after Epic’s decision not to remove its own direct payment system in the app from Fortnite.

The two companies are now in a legal battle over it, with Epic having so far succeeded in preventing one of the developer accounts from being removed ̵

1; the one that makes it possible to work on Unreal Engine specifically.

Apple says it is “disappointed” that it had to close the account.

We are disappointed that we have had to close the Epic Games account in the App Store. We have been working with the team at Epic Games for many years with the launches and releases. The court recommended that Epic adhere to the App Store guidelines as their case progresses, guidelines they have followed for the past decade until they created this situation. Epic has refused. Instead, they repeatedly send Fortnite updates designed to violate the App Store guidelines. This is not fair to all other developers in the App Store and puts customers in the middle of the battle. We hope we can work together again in the future, but unfortunately it is not possible today.

Epic has so far claimed that Apple did not “have” to kill the account, although Epic knew what would happen if it did not change course. As always, the only ones who really lose here are the players.
