Brandon Azad Of Project Zero has now joined Apple

The jailbreak community is in mourning. Brandon Azad, the extremely talented security researcher who is responsible for discovering a number of tfp0 exploits for iOS, has left Project Zero to join the ranks of Apple.

Azad took to Twitter to make the announcement and confirmed that he would leave Project Zero and join Apple as early as “next week.”

It is with both bittersweet sadness and excitement that I say goodbye to Project Zero, as I join Apple next week to continue the work to improve Apple device security. My time at Project Zero has been fantastic, and it has been an honor to take part in this fantastic mission.

The tweet essentially confirms that Apple has hired Azad for the skills he has exhibited on so many occasions while undercut at Project Zero. A number of Azad’s exploits and vulnerabilities have formed the basis of popular prison crimes that have been used to free Apple devices. These companies were never discovered by Project Zero with sole intention to contribute to a jailbreak, but once they are out in the public domain, it is open season for who uses them.

Azad’s work has turned it into prison offenses such as Chimera, Uncover and Electra. Now, however, it looks like Azad will be on the other side of the fence and actively working with Apple to minimize these vulnerabilities and improve device security with the goal of countering jailbreakers and making life much more difficult for security researchers.

This is not the first time Apple has looked to the jailbreak community for help improving its devices and software, but it’s definitely a big blow to the passionate jailbreakers out there who trust people like Brandon Azad to feed the machine with sophisticated exploits.

Azad signed off with another tweet, thanking his Team Zero teammates for the experience:

What are your views on the transition? Has Apple played a strategic masterpiece that will backfire on the jailbreak community? Or does society have enough talent to cope with this battle?
