Catalina MacBook can not connect to old OSX Server: mac

I think this is some SMB / AFP issue with Catalina, but I have an old Mac Mini running an old OSX server. It is basically a Time Capsule, saves files and backs up Time Machine on the network.

Time Machine works for Catalina MacBook, my Windows PCs connect to the shared folders, I can connect via “Command K” using afp: // servername (or IP), and it works pretty well.

But when I try to just “connect” to the server in the finder, it does not work, it is as if it rejects my password (which works well in the other examples above) and tries “Command K” using smb: // does not work either.

Is there a trick to make this work again?
