Clean up, optimize and speed up your Mac with Cleaner One

We offer links to a free Mac cleaner and a free PC cleaner you can download. These tools help you restore disk space and improve performance. And did we mention that they are free?

We rotate our computers together. Whether it is desktops filled with so many icons, it is difficult to find anything, or large files that are no longer needed for no reason, we generate a lot of data that really needs to be thrown away.

Although we are super fast, computers generate their own rubbish. New updates, uninstallations, extra translations, and continuous use create digital damage that takes up precious storage space while you hang on to performance.

While you could – if you had the time and knew where to look – hunt all your remaining files and clean them, your Mac does not have a built-in way to find and remove this waste.

Here it will rotate. Back in the “before times” (before COVID-19 forced many of us to work from home) we often had a work computer and a home computer. But now, for many of us, the home computer is our most important work computer. And while the company’s IT team is still available, you can no longer just bring in your computer so they can clean and set up. In many small and big ways you are alone.

If you use your personal MacBook or MacBook Pro, it probably has less memory and storage space than your work computer to begin with, so it’s even more important to keep the clutter in check.

In this article, we focus on Cleaner One Pro, a program designed to help you turn as many cycles and gigabytes as possible from your laptop.

Why is my Mac so slow? Here’s how to fix it.

After installing Cleaner One Pro, you get a dashboard that has some easy-to-understand rings.

The easiest and fastest way to clean your Mac is to click the Clean button under Junk Files. In a matter of minutes, Cleaner One Pro will scan the disk and remove the most common and safe files it can find. On the iMac that was used to write this article, that cleanup button cleared almost five gigabytes of storage in what seemed like 5 seconds.

Next to the disk for junk files, there is a disk for memory usage that reflects how much RAM applications, operating system and background processes use. Applications often use RAM blocks briefly, but they may not return these blocks to the general RAM pool as other applications may use when they are finished. The memory user wheel has an Optimize button. When you press it, it finds as many of these RAM blocks as it can, and returns them to your computer’s main RAM for use by other programs. This machine, which has 16 GB of RAM, ran very close to the capacity of 14 GB. By clicking the Optimize button, almost half of the system’s RAM returned to the pool.

This is very important for system performance. Macs use a memory management technique called “swap”. When there is too much RAM, MacOS switches data from RAM to storage. Back in the days of spinning disks, storage was unbearably slow. Today’s SSDs are faster, but they are still 20-30 times slower than RAM. If you can optimize your memory, you can reduce or eliminate switching, which can result in performance improvements you can really feel.

How to clean and set up your Mac

While we’re on the topic of optimization, we’ll look at two tools that can help you answer the question “How can I speed up my Mac?”

When you click the System Optimizer button in Cleaner One Pro, you will see a screen with a number of options on the left. The first one we look at is Startup Manager. This tool allows you to customize what starts when your computer starts up.

On the Mac that was used to write this article, we found a number of apps in the Login Items category that started at startup that just weren’t needed. We also found a few apps we actually wanted to launch automatically that did not. With a quick flick of the switch, these apps run automatically.

Launch Agents is another category of launch items. These are background utilities that run in support of system and user-installed applications. On this Mac, we found quite a few that supported hardware that is no longer installed on the system. This machine had run them, using memory and processor capacity, for no reason. Cleaner One Pro for Mac allowed us to turn them off.

Then we will turn on deleting applications completely. This is often a problem in MacOS, where it may look like you have deleted an app, but in reality there are still many files still taking up space. Cleaner One Pro solves this. When you click on App Manager, you get a complete list of installed apps and their support files. You can delete all individual support files or the application in its entirety.

How to clean up storage

When most laptops moved from spinning hard drives to SSDs, they became much faster. However, since SSDs are more expensive, many laptops come with less storage than their hard drive-based cousins. It’s not uncommon to see 128 GB or 256 GB laptops, which is fine for surfing Facebook, but can get quite limited if you try to do some real work.

Fortunately, Cleaner One Pro excels at finding room pigs and cleaning them. One of the most effective tools is the Disk Map feature. This tool allows you to see how storage is used on the entire drive. For example, it may tell you that photos take up a lot of gigabytes of space, or that a video you produced a few months ago actually consumes a disproportionate amount of storage space. It is a great starting point for reclaiming space.

Then there’s the big hammer for the Cleaner One Pro: Big Files scan. This tool allows you to view the very largest files on your computer, so you can either back them up to another medium or delete them.

Cleaner One Pro also scans for and deletes junk files. This is a more powerful extension of the system scan we discussed at the beginning of this article. These files include system buffers, unused disk images, application buffers, logs, language files, and browser buffers. Windows users can also use this tool to delete remaining Windows Update files.

There are two more space recovery features we especially like: Duplicate files and similar images, both of which live up to their names. You can run both tools on a single folder, a folder tree, or an entire drive. What makes these so powerful compared to other duplicate finder tools is the comparison window, so you can decide if and which copy of a duplicate file you want to keep.
