The faster cellular computer networks are being rolled out now will bring tremendous benefits to Apple, according to a well-known industry analyst. Gene Munster even said today, "Apple will be one of 5G's largest recipients."
He listed a number of current and future products that will see the benefits of this emerging wireless technology.
"Apple has four measures that will significantly benefit from 5G: iPhone, enhanced reality, healthcare, and autonomous vehicles," Muster said in a note to investors today.
No 5G iPhone? No problem
The analyst from Loop Ventures seems unconcerned that it will probably not be a 5G iPhone on the market until before the year, even as competing phone calls such as Samsung and Huawei announce their first models.
Muster means that Apple has plenty of time to get a handset with the new technology in customer hands and points out that "we expect it to take until the end of 2022 before 75% of the US population will have 5G service."
He sees the significant reduction in latency promised by 5G radically changing future phones in ways someone now expects. "Real-time data will allow new phone designs, new applications, device storage, and cloud computing for AI applications, game play, and other computationally intensive mobile usage cases."
5G advances many other products
Analyst Loop Ventures urged Apple investors not to concentrate too much on phones. He said: "5G will enable or enhance the enhanced reality, wireless virtual reality, countless IoT and smart home applications, autonomous vehicles and V2X communications to name a few."
Apple's ARKit puts it ahead of expanded reality (AR) development. The company also has a secret team that develops a set of AR glasses. People who wear these will need constant, quick access to the internet that will benefit from 5G.
The development of Apple's self-propelled vehicles hit a speed recently, but the company is looking forward to being committed to the project. Autonomous vehicles will depend on 5G for near-instant communication with other cars, as well as traffic information servers.
Apple has spent many years integrating health properties into its products. The last major change was to build an ECG in the 2018 Apple Watch. In the future, the company is expected to build health monitoring functions in future AirPod wireless ear plugs.
