Health Canada approves Apple Watch ECG app, Hinting Launch Imminent

Canadians who bought an Apple Watch Series 4 in Canada can soon get the device's electrocardiogram and ECG program and irregular rhythm messages, since both features are approved by Health Canada.

According to Health Canada's website, two active licenses from Apple now appear as approved: 102864 for the ECG app and 102866 for the irregular rhythm alert feature.

"Unit's first issue date" for both features is listed as Thursday, May 16, 2019, an approval date could possibly go to fly under the radar of the Victoria Day long weekend.

The Apple Watch Series 4 ECG app was first launched for users with devices purchased in the US back in December, closing out Canadians. Back in March, the ECG app launched in Europe and Hong Kong for Series 4 owners, who again joined Canada. The lack of support resulted in some Canadians signing a petition asking Apple to release the feature here.

Health Canada has regularly responded to Canadian queries on Twitter whether or not Apple has submitted an application for the Apple Watch Series ECG app. 4.

In March, Health Canada said that Apple had "communicated" the ECG function coming soon, and broke the months of silence, but still noted that no applications had been received.

Now, with both the ECG app and the irregular rhythm alert feature showing approval from Health Canada, it's just a matter of time before Apple announces it will expand into Canada.

With Apple Watch Series 4, a user can take an ECG in 30 seconds just by putting a finger on the device's Digital Crown:

Electrodes embedded in Digital Crown and the rear crystal work with the ECG app to read the heart's electrical signals . Just touch the Digital Crown to generate an ECG waveform in just 30 seconds. This data may indicate if the heart's rhythm shows signs of atrial fibrillation – a serious form of irregular heartbeat – or sinus rhythm, which means your heart beats in a normal pattern.

WWDC starts the first week of June, so we can hear more about the ECG app then, but if not, the company's expected September iPhone event is likely to be the second best bet to hear about an announcement. Or, Apple can announce the expansion during its next quarterly earnings call.

Are you concerned about Apple releasing the ECG app in Canada for Apple Watch Series 4?

Thank you John A.!
