How do I add two highlight colors and assign two un keys?

In a response to the great post “How to Highlight” in 2019 (https://macmost.com/how-to-highlight-text-in-mac-pages.html), you wrote: “I can make other highlights. So for example I can change the background color to yellow for this. Select it and then I can add another one under Character Styles and change this to yellow highlight. So now I can easily select some text and I can switch to yellow highlight. “can also set it as a keyboard shortcut. So I can name it F2. Now I can change an existing green to yellow with F2. I can also select some new text with F2.”

When I try to do this, the Plus character in the Character Styles drop-down menu is not dark (selectable), so I can not add another highlight color associated with another function key.

I often need / like to use two highlight colors in a text.
