How to catch Ditto in Pokémon Go in 2019

How to catch Ditto in Pokemon Go!

Ditto is a transformable Pokémon ̵

1; really taking on the appearance and characteristics of other Pokémon. Although Ditto was missing from the original release of Pokémon Go Gen 1, he eventually found his way out into the world, hiding as Pidgy, Ratatta, Zubat and Magikarp. With Gen 2, Ditto also learned to hide like Sentra, Yanma and Hoothoot, and Gen 3, like Zigzagoon and Taillow. When Shiny Magikarp appeared, Ditto Magikarp disappeared. Now, just as Ditto has become a prerequisite for finding the mythical Mew, Ditto has also added Whismur, Gulpin, Paras and Remoraid to his repertoire, and now Meltan.

So come out, come out, wherever you are. It's time to play hunting and catching!

Which Pokémon Can Be Ditto?

Starting August 2019:

  1. Paras
  2. Center
  3. Yanma
  4. Hoothoot
  5. Whismur
  6. Gulpin
  7. Remoraid
  8. Ledyba
  9. Venonate

February 2019: Ditto can now be Venonat or Ledyba, can no longer be Pidgey or Ratatta

Thanks to the arrival of Shiny Pidget and Ratatta, which means they can no longer be Ditto in disguise – because anyone who catches a Shiny just to Seeing it become a non-shiny Ditto would be super sad / crazy – Pokémon Go has swapped them for Venonaut and Ledyba.

So make sure you keep checking Pidget and Ratatta for a chance at a shiny, but now also check Ledyba and Venonat for a chance at a Ditto.

What is Ditto and why do you want it?

Ditto is one of the first generations of Pokémon that was unavailable at the launch of the Pokémon Go game. It took a while for that to change. You want Ditto because the hiding mechanic is not only cool, you need it to complete Pokédex. Here is the official announcement:

Professor Willow has finally discovered Ditto! Coaches all over the world have reported on their appearance.

Ditto has been known to hide like other Pokémon, so watch out, some Pokémon may actually be Ditto, and when you catch them, there's a chance that Ditto will reveal itself. If you come across a Pokémon that is Ditto in disguise, Pokémon in the specific meeting will also reveal themselves as Ditto to other trainers.

Ditto is also a unique Pokémon when interacting with gyms. When you train or fight at a gym, Ditto will copy the look, types and movements of the first Pokémon it sees, and it will stay that way throughout the rest of the Gym games.

And now you also need Ditto to find Mew?

Yes, as part of the Spring 2018 research update, Pokémon Go added to a Mythical Discovery quest. One of the tasks of the 5th part is to catch a Ditto. You have to do it before you can go ahead and find – and try to catch – Mew.

So Ditto is hiding like other Pokémon?

Yup! Ditto can transform into other Pokémon, and so far he is only encountered in the wild in his transformed state. That means you can't see Ditto nearby or sightings, and you don't want to know if he's spawning right next to you until you catch him.

It is only then that you are met with an "Oh?" instead of a "Gotcha!" and he will be revealed as Ditto. So you have to catch them all. Literal. Because some of them may be Ditto.

When it comes to game mechanics, how it seems to work anytime you catch what might be a Ditto in disguise, the Pokémon Go servers randomly decide if it's a Ditto or not. [19659004] So until it is captured, it is not a Ditto and cannot be detected as a Ditto at all. Once trapped and determined to be a Ditto, anyone who catches the same Pokémon will also have it revealed to be a Ditto.

Schrodingers Pokemon, be sure!

What Gen 1 Pokémon Can Be Ditto in Disguise?

Ditto hides himself like a very ordinary Pokémon. In Gen 1, it includes:

1, Venonate
1. Paras

Wait, no more Ditton hiding like Magikarp, Pidget or Rattata?

No, not since Shiny Magikarp came out and the reaction to losing a Shiny Karp to a non-shiny Ditto was … extreme. Pokémon Go fixed it within days by telling Ditto that it could no longer hide in Magikarp. The same has now happened to Pidget and Rattata thanks to their shiny versions becoming available.

What Gen 2 Pokémon Can Be Ditto in Disguise?

Gen 2 has only four Ditto candidates so far, and one of them is typically far less common than all the others:

  1. Hoothoot
  2. Center
  3. Yanma
  4. Ledyba

Which Gen 3 Pokémon can be Ditto in disguise?

  1. Whismur
  2. Gulpin

Ugh, so do you really have to catch a lot of people?

Yes, but remember that you can use many of them to grind XP, so even if they are not Ditto. So it is not time / effort completely wasted.

Is there any way to speed up the Ditto trapping process?

Yes. Crowd-source it. If you're already part of a local Pokémon Go community on Discord, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Slack or a similar service, such as organizing raids, you can ask everyone to post Ditto meetings so you can try to come to a live. You may want to create your own group or room for Ditto hunting so that you do not spam players who already have Ditto, but as long as it is local, it will increase your chances.

How do I catch Ditto when I find it?

Since Ditto hides as usual Pokémon, you catch it the same way. Some regular Pokémon are harder to catch than you expect – thanks, Pokémon Go! – especially if it is low level (IV) and high level. This is where CP looks low, but they are very hard to catch. Ditto also tends to fall into that category.

The usual rules, however, apply. Always go for basket balls and stack as many bonuses as you can and wear them!

Where can I catch Ditto?

Ditto does not have nests or spawning points per se, but Pokémon that may be Ditto in disguise certainly does.

Some areas, including PokéStops, gyms, parking lots, malls, etc. have spawn points where several Pokémon show up at the same time and most of them are the really common type. It's perfect for Ditto.

I caught my first Ditto in the parking lot of a McDonald's. I've caught others at spawn places on street corners and food courts.

If you see two Rattata or a pair of Pidgey, you can catch them all and play the odds of getting a Ditto.

Can I get Ditto with incense and lures?

The second Ditto I caught was from incense, and so were the next four or so. Lures also work. That means you can drop one or the other, and instead of focusing on a rare one, focus on the four to six commons that appear. Catch them and hope for the best.

So if you have a favorite route or favorite place to hang, drop some incense or lure and cross your fingers, let Ditto come to you.

Is Ditto random or can everyone catch him?

If you catch a Gulpin and it turns out to be Ditto, anyone else who catches that Gulpin will see it become Ditto as well. In other words, when a Pokémon is revealed as Ditto, it is consistently Ditto for everyone.

So if you play as a family or are in a group and one of you catches Ditto, let everyone else know it and you I get all Ditto. Sharing and conquering is a great way to throw through many low-level spawns at the same time.

Can I catch Ditto with Pokémon Go Plus?

Yes, absolutely! It will try to catch Ditto's just like the wild Pokémon Ditto's he pretends to be. Catch that Pokémon and you've caught Ditto. But keep in mind that Pokémon Go Plus only throws normal Poké Balls, so there's also a chance Pokémon will run, and you'll never know if it was a Ditto or not.

How does Ditto work in gyms and raids?

Ditto has only one move: Transform and Struggle. Transform does zero damage, but instead Ditto instantly changes into the same Pokémon as he fights. It is true whether he defends a gym or attacks it, for training or for taking down.

He also takes on the attributes of the Pokémon that he imitates, although there are some reports that his exact CP will vary based on his level rather than the level of Pokémon he copies. And of course, one Ditto that turns into another Ditto remains the same.
