How to customize which photos each app has access to (new for iOS 14)



iOS 14 lets users choose which photos or albums each app can access, and which ones to keep private.


Customizing which images individual apps have access to is a great security feature. Now you do not have to let all apps access all your photos. You can give access to a few photos or even just one, depending on what you use the app for. In this article, you will learn how to customize the photos an app can access on your iPhone. This is a new feature for iOS 1

You are probably familiar with the screen that appears when you download a new app when it requests access to your photos. In iOS 14, you now have three options for allowing or denying access to photos. You can choose between:

  • Select Photos (new iOS 14 option: customize which photos can be opened and used by the app)
  • Allow access to all images (give the app access to all the photos in your photo library)
  • Not allowed (prevent the app from accessing photos)

How to customize photo access for an app already on iPhone

If you already have an app like Instagram or Facebook downloaded on your iPhone, you may want to customize the Photos app’s access to those apps. Follow these steps to customize your access:

  1. Open yours Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to select an app. For this example, I chose Instagram.
  3. Press Pictures.




  4. Decide which access level you want to give this app and tap it. I choose Selected images.
  5. From here you can select individual images you want to give access to, or you can press Album at the top of the screen to select entire albums.




  6. When you have selected the images you want to give access to, press Finished.



  7. You can repeat this process for all apps with Photo access, such as Facebook, Snapchat or TikTok.

How to edit which images an app can access

If you have already customized the image access for an app, but want to edit the images you have chosen to give access to, follow these steps.

  1. Open yours Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to select an app. For this example, I chose Instagram.
  3. Select Pictures in the options in the app settings.




  4. Press Edit selected images.
  5. Now you can select and deselect the images you want.
  6. When you have selected the images you want to give access to, press Finished.




  7. You can repeat this process for any app with Photos app access, such as Facebook, Snapchat or TikTok.

How to customize image access for an app you just downloaded

  1. When you first download a new app that has the potential to use your photos, you will see more security instructions when you first open the app.
  2. First, you will see more instructions asking you to give permission to use the camera and send you alerts. Choose the options that suit your needs.
  3. Finally, you will be asked for Photos app access. You will see Privacy for your photos with a small explanation below. Press the blue button at the bottom of the screen that says Continue.



  4. The following screen allows you to choose from three options: Select Photos (new iOS 14 option: customize which photos can be opened and used by the app), Allow access to all images (give the app access to all the photos in your photo library), and Not allowed (prevent the app from accessing photos).
  5. Press Select Photos.



  6. You can now select individual photos or albums to give this app access. Additionally, you can type words in the search box at the top of the screen to narrow down which images you want to select. For example, I searched for “dogs” to limit my search to just pictures of my dog.
  7. When you have selected the images you want the app to access, press Finished.



Now that you know how to provide customized access to your photos for each app, you can feel safe allowing Facebook, Instagram and other apps to access specific photos without giving those apps access to all of your photos. Enjoy sharing photos safely!
