How to edit the number of recent items in the Mac Apple menu

When trying to get back to a recent document, program, or server, a quick way to do it on macOS is to click on the Apple () menu and select Recent items. This displays a list of three headings – applications, documents and servers – with a number of entries listed under each heading (see image below):

Apple menu "Recent Items" lists recently used Applications, documents and servers.

You may find that the list is a little too long (or short) for your liking, in which case it is a way to edit how many items displayed under Programs (for reasons) known only to Apple, the number not is changed for documents or servers).

To do so, start System Preferences from the Dock or select Apple () menu> System Preferences. When System Preferences opens, click General, and then click the number that appears next to Recent Items (see screenshot below):

  The Recent Items pop-up menu in System Preferences> General provides a selection of the items you want to see "class. = "wp-image-51071" width = "568" height = "580" srcset = "https://blog.macsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Edited-Screen-Shot-2019-07 -26-at-1.49.52-PM-284x290.png 284w, https://blog.macsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Edited-Screen-Shot-2019-07-26-at- 1.49.52-PM-186x190.png 186w, https://blog.macsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Edited-Screen-Shot-2019-07-26-at-1.49.52-PM -117x120.png 117w, https://blog.macsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Edited-Screen-Shot-2019-07-26-at-1.49.52-PM.png 1316w, https : //blog.macsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Edited-Screen-Shot-2019-07-26-at-1.49.52-PM-284x290@2x.png 568w, https: // blog.macsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Edited-Screen-Shot-2019-07-26-at-1.49.5 2-PM-186x190@2x.png 372w, htt ps: //blog.macsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Edited-Screen-Shot-2019-07-26-at-1.49.52- PM-117x120@2x.png 234w "sizes =" (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px "/>

<p> For example, a previous screen shows that my Mac showed ten items under Recent items for applications and documents. Changing the number to five makes the list much more useful for finding recently used apps, while changing the number to 20 or greater would be more useful for a person working with a large number of apps or documents every day. </p>
<p> As you increase the number of recent listings, the lists no longer appear right away. When you open more items, the lists will grow in length. </p><div><script async src=
