How to mirror an iPhone or iPad for your TV

Do not get stuck to watch video or play games on a small screen. You can use your iPhone or iPad with larger screens. There are a few ways to view iOS content on a TV, projector or any HDMI compatible display.

There is also a difference between mirroring and video printing only. You can use iPhone or iPad to watch videos or listen to audio while browsing social media or online at the same time! This is how it works.

1. Send video or mirror your monitor with AirPlay

AirPlay is Apple's proprietary wireless display technology

and allows you to send a photo wirelessly to an AirPlay receiver. In order to use AirPlay, you need a compatible receiver. The most common for video is Apple TV (from $ 149).

The Apple TV unit connects to the screen via HDMI, acts as a set-top box, and has its own apps and App Store. It also has other great features, like displaying your latest iPhone photos and playing music from iTunes or Apple Music. See our guide to setting up and using Apple TV to get started.

To send to a Mac or Windows PC, you can do it with an app called AirServer ($ 20). You can also purchase audio equipment compatible with AirPlay for streaming music.

Mirroring vs Outputting

Remember: You can mirror your monitor, which maintains the device's display aspect ratio, for example. 4: 3 for an iPad). Or you can send out the current video or other media that only sends music, videos, and any games to the TV. In most cases you will do the latter. [19659000] To mirror your iPhone or iPad screen to an AirPlay receiver:

  1. Access Control Center on your device (see note below).
  2. Touch the Screen Mirroring button.
  3. Select your AirPlay Receiver when it appears.

  AirPlay Screen Mirroring

To the video will display without mirroring the entire screen:

  1. Access Control Center on your device (see note below).
  2. Long Press or 3D Press Media Controls .
  3. Touch the AirPlay button (a triangle with some circles) on the right.
  4. Select your AirPlay Receiver when it appears.

] Not sure how to access Control Center?

  • With an iPhone X or later, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen. [19659017] On iPhone 8 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  • iPad users should double-click the Home button to download App Switcher.

Since AirPlay is a wireless connection, you find that interference, slow Wi-Fi, older Bluetooth devices, and so on, can adversely affect performance. When playing a game, you will probably notice a delay between the input and what you see on the screen.

But to watch videos, listen to music, present presentations, share a series of family with family members or even view a webpage so others can watch the screen, AirPlay is a great choice.

2. Use a wired adapter

  Apple-Lightning-Hdmi

There are some disadvantages of using a wired adapter, but the current model is better than it once was. The problem stems from the fact that the Lightning port on iPhone and iPad is not built to perform video signal. Whatever Apple's reasoning (likely to allow smaller devices), the functionality was moved to an adapter.

The first batch of light-to-HDMI adapters had trouble; they peaked at a resolution of 900p. Although the current models promise 1080p, reviews are not good. They mention problems like frequent black screens and sudden hardware failures. For the $ 49 price tag and the hassle involved, an Apple TV does not seem like such a bad investment relatively.

To Mirror Your iPhone Screen Using a Lightning Two HDMI Adapter:

  1. Connect the adapter to the flash port on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Connect the monitor or projector via the HDMI cable.
  3. Switch to the correct source on the screen to see the device mirrored.

You can also get Lyn to VGA Adapters, which seem to have many of the same problems and do not support HDCP.

3. Use Google Chromecast

You can use Google's wireless casting technology to view content wirelessly from iPhone or iPad, although it seems a little different. Chromecast is Google's response to Apple TV, and for $ 35 (or $ 69 for the 4K compatible Chromecast Ultra) you can stream content from the mobile device to your TV.

It's not possible to mirror your entire screen using Chromecast, as Apple limits technology to its first-party products. However, many iOS apps like YouTube, Netflix and Spotify support Chromecast. Check out Wikipedia's list of supported Chromecast apps for more.

Each app handles Chromecast integration a bit differently, so there's no easy way to stream video or other media from an iOS app. Just look for the cast button in the app you're currently using.

What do you use to mirror your iPhone or iPad?

AirPlay is the best way to mirror or send the media to an external monitor or audio device, but it's also the most expensive one. Wired solutions are impenetrable and problematic according to how the Lightning standard was designed. Therefore, Apple is pushing wireless streaming.

If you already have a Chromecast, or feel that you can live without real turnaround and make use of app-by-app compatibility, this is a great option. For AirPlay connectivity at Chromecast prices, check AirPlay receivers that are cheaper than Apple TV
