Freebies Freebies once were a common feature of the Mac360. As it turns out, after more than 14 years of publishing, more than 700 Fridays and more than 8,000 articles, we don't have enough free apps to match the available Fridays.
It brings me to Friday and the cheap temp Monitor app for Mac. Because we Mac users are curious about our favored devices, you may want to know what happens inside as the Mac tab starts spinning. Temp Monitor can help.
Most of today's Mac lines have fans. That's because every Mac has advanced technology, which when under stress or resting in the wrong environment, can overheat. Whether it is storage of CPU or GPU or regular old motherboard, hot is hot and heat kills. The fans are in every Mac to make sure the heat doesn't win the war.
The Temp Monitor app is a modest tool that will notify you when your Mac overheats, and the perfect tool to help you log all cases when the processor goes beyond a temperature that can be dangerous to both your Mac and yourself , if you are using a MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Temp Monitor lives in the Mac menu, runs in the background, but has many options to display, and even tells you the current temperature (fan goes or otherwise) and where the overheating can occur.
Seriously. How much fun is this for just a few bucks?
Temp Monitor shows more information than you would expect given the price tag. Temperature. Fan. Voltage and current. What should I not like? Each Mac is packed with a multitude of sensors and Temp Monitor monitors each one, then displays the sensor name and lets you choose which one to monitor from the Menu Bar.
The graph shows your Mac's temperature over a period of time, and you can set alerts for each sensor and component.
There are many activities, situations, and applications that can turn a Mac fan on and off. The noise a fan makes can be scary, but it is a good thing and a warning that your Mac needs to cool down because it has worked too hard.
Temp Monitor can help you see what is happening but not designed to solve the problem. It is a warning system with more specific information than fan noise. It's not a freebie on Friday, but the app is worth more than a few bucks.
