The microphone icon on the iPhone and iPad keyboard is for dictation. Once you have tapped on it, you speak, and it effortlessly writes what you dictate. Despite being a handy feature, many users prefer to type, swipe and rarely use dictation. In addition, someone presses this button accidentally and will therefore get rid of it. Fortunately, it is very easy to do. Let me show you how to remove the microphone icon from the keyboard of iPhone or iPad.
How to get rid of the microphone icon on your iPhone or iPad keyboard
- To open Settings app and press General.
- Press Keyboard.
- Turn off the switch for ‘Enable dictation‘and confirm.
Now open Notes or other apps that involve the keyboard. You will see that the microphone icon at the bottom right of iPhones with Face ID is no longer there. On iPhones with the Home button, the space bar is slightly larger as it occupies the area that the microphone button first took up.
To add the microphone icon to the iPhone keyboard, follow the steps above and turn on the switch for ‘Enable dictation.’
There is quite a lot for this topic when it comes to removing and adding the microphone icon.

Alternatively, you can switch to a third-party keyboard like the amazing SwiftKey! However, some of these (including SwiftKey) may have their own version of voice writing. But you can easily turn them off in the app settings.
