How to use the Siri Suggestions widget to modify applications on the Home screen

Siri Suggestions widget - The hero image of the iPhone screen

The new Siri Suggestions widget can dynamically suggest apps or shortcuts on the home screen of your iPhone or iPod touch that you might want to use next time, based on usage and your personal patterns. The Siri Suggestions widget is without a doubt one of the most useful widgets in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. In this tutorial, we will explain how to get Siri intelligence to dynamically curate your apps and display suggested actions, right on the home screen.

Home screen widgets in iOS 14

iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 have interactive modules that provide extracts of information on the home screen. iOS widgets existed before iOS 14, but were not as powerful as their iOS 14 counterparts. You can certainly not drop them anywhere on the home screen, for example.

Apple’s overhauled interactive widgets in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, not only to be nicer, but also to give you more information in an instant. You can choose from five different sizes and arrange the widgets however you want on the home screen of your iPhone or iPod touch.

Widgets in iPadOS 14 are related to the Today view that can be attached to the first home screen of the iPad. You can’t place iPad widgets anywhere you want on the Home screen.

We present the Siri Suggestions widget

One of the new widgets is Siri Suggestions, as Apple describes it:

The Siri Suggestions widget uses intelligence on your device to view actions you can take based on your usage patterns, such as ordering a coffee or launching a podcast. Tap the suggestion to perform the action without launching the app.

You can choose from suggested apps or shortcuts. The great thing about the app suggestion widget is that it does not look like a widget at all. In fact, it literally does not differ from other icons on the Home screen, plus it automatically updates itself based on usage.

This means that the bottom two rows of icons (or wherever you place the widget), for example, can show you apps you probably need at the moment. But as you go around your day, these icons always rotate to surface relevant apps that you’re likely to launch next time.

More than what the eye can see

If you choose to add shortcut suggestions instead of app suggestions on the Home screen, you can choose from three widget sizes: 2 × 2, 4 × 2, and 4 × 4. On top of that, you can add more Siri suggestion widgets to the Home screen. And because multiple widgets are not duplicated, this is how you can get Siri to collect even more apps on the home screen for you.

With the widget, you can choose between displaying suggested apps or suggested shortcuts

For example, you may want to place your app suggestions at the bottom of the first home screen and suggested actions in a 2 × 2 widget at the top. On the other home page, you can have a larger 4 × 4 widget for more suggested actions, for example.

EDUCATION: How to use Siri-powered widget stacks on iPhone

Follow us as we detail the steps to show you how to add one or more Siri suggestion widgets to the home screen of your iPhone or iPod touch.

How to use Siri Suggestions widget on iPhone

Follow these steps to add a Siri Suggestions widget to your Home screen.

  1. Enter the wrong mode by holding an icon, then select the Edit Home screen from the popup window.
  2. Press the plus sign (+) in the upper left corner.
  3. Scroll down the widget gallery and select Siri suggestions from the list.
  4. Swipe left or right to select suggested apps, actions, and widget sizes.
  5. Tap Add widget to place the custom widget on the Home screen.
  6. To complete the changes, press Done or press the Home button or swipe up from the bottom.
  7. Repeat the steps above to add more Siri suggestion widgets to the Home screen.

With app suggestions, the widget will not have a background, so you can not even tell that it is a widget. As a result, these dynamically suggested apps blend perfectly with other icons on the Home screen.

A background is only visible when you edit an app suggestion widget.

To summarize, the Siri Suggestions widget lets you choose from:

  • Appforslag: Get suggestions for app launches based on your usage patterns.
  • Shortcut Suggestions: See relevant shortcut actions based on your usage patterns.

Many of these suggested shortcut actions depend on your usage pattern and may include things like ordering a coffee or starting a podcast. If a suggestion is actually relevant to your current context, hit it to perform the action without launching the app.

And here are the available sizes for these widgets:

  • Appforslag: 4 x 2
  • Shortcut Suggestions: 2 × 2, 4 × 2 and 4 × 4

The Siri Suggestions widget also lets you influence your recommendations appropriately.

Training the Siri Suggestions widget

As mentioned, the Siri Suggestions widget in iOS and iPadOS 14 benefits from intelligence on the device that continuously analyzes usage patterns, device and app activity and so on. Although nothing is ever sent to the cloud, artificial intelligence is not perfect.

If the Siri Suggestions widget has suggested the wrong app or action, you can ask the system to stop recommending it on the Home screen (you can change this later).

To remove a suggested app from the Home screen

Follow these steps to remove a specific app suggestion from the Home screen.

  1. Touch and hold a recommended app in the Siri Suggestions widget.
  2. Select the Remove option from the pop-up menu, and then confirm the operation.

If you do, the widget will not recommend the current app on the Home screen. The suggestion is immediately removed from the widget on the home screen.

  2. Select the Suggest shortcut option from the pop-up menu.

Now the widget will suggest the special shortcut on the home screen less often.

Suggests notes shortcuts less on the home screen

If you want to prevent the Siri Suggestions widget from browsing a particular shortcut on the Home screen at all, you can also:

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Select Siri & Search from the root list.
  3. Tap a desired app to disable Siri suggestions on the Home screen.
  4. Turn off the Suggest app shortcuts option under the home screen header.

If you do, Siri Intelligence will not be able to suggest shortcuts for this app on both the lock screen and the home screen when you use the Siri Suggestions widget.

Completely remove suggestions on the Notes home screen

Conversely, activating the toggle again tells the widget that it is safe to recommend the action again.
