Apple shocked some fans in 2017 when it launched the first iPhone without Touch ID fingerprint sensor. The iPhone X was also the first iPhone ever to feature 3D facial recognition technology, a biometric authentication solution that is far superior to Touch ID. Meanwhile, the competition failed to copy Apple's Face ID, and Android device manufacturers went a different way, using display panels with integrated fingerprint sensors. Google just confirmed that its rival of the iPhone 11 will have its own Face ID option this year, suggesting that the Pixel 4 will lack a fingerprint sensor on the screen. But Apple is already working to combine the two sensors into a single device. An Apple insider who provided several accurate reports on unreleased Apple hardware says the company wants both Touch ID and Face ID on the iPhone come 2021
Back in early 2017, when the iPhone X's commercial name wasn't even leaked, rumors It said the phone will have a fingerprint sensor on the screen, something Apple had been studying for years. Apple had several patents that described different ways of reading a fingerprint through the screen from optical sensors to more sophisticated ultrasonic sensors (such as those Samsung launched earlier this year with the Galaxy S10). These reports eventually went into rumors that Face ID would replace Touch ID instead of joining it. When Apple unveiled the iPhone X, the company said it never intended to merge the two biometric technologies when Face ID became viable.
Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Industries said (via 9to5Mac ) in a new research note from developers that Apple will unite Touch ID and Face ID coming 2021 iPhone models. The analyst says Apple is likely to use a variant of Qualcomm's ultrasound fingerprint sensor on the display, which is the kind of technology found in Galaxy S10 phones. Ultrasonic sensors allow an increased sensing range on the screen compared to optical sensors, making the scanning experience easier. It is unclear whether Apple will develop by 2021 technology that will allow the sensor to read fingerprints anywhere on the screen.
Kuo said that issues including power consumption, sensor area size, sensor module thickness and output yield would be resolved by 2021. The analysis also added that if Apple adds more biometric sensors to the clock, touch ID on the screen is more likely alternative than Face ID.
The iPhone 11 phones released next month will feature the same design as the iPhone XR and iPhone XS phones when it comes to display and biometrics. We look at phones with Face ID notches and full screen screens. Next year's phones, meanwhile, are expected to introduce new technologies, including 5G support, according to recent reports.
When it comes to the competition, only one company has launched phones with both fingerprints and 3D facial recognition sensors, and that's Huawei, with its late 2018 Mate 20 Pro.
