Instagram added support for landscape movies on IGTV. And it's also time. Since its launch, IGTV has only supported portrait videos, but Instagram has now seen the error in its ways. What might indicate that IGTV has not proved as popular as Instagram had hoped.
A Brief History of IGTV
In June 2018, Instagram launched IGTVor Instagram TV. The idea was to compete with YouTube, with a standalone app packed to the long-wave video. Almost one year on, and it is reasonable to say that IGTV has not met that ambition.
While Instagram itself has over 1 billion users, it is estimated that IGTV has around 4 million. That explains why Instagram is eager to give IGTV a bang in the right direction and it starts with supporting landscapes.
From Portrait to Landscape
Upon launch, Instagram made a big thing about all the videos being presented vertically (or portrait). The idea is that when we all keep our smartphones that way, it's also the right orientation for videos.
The problem is that most of us are used to turning our phones to see landscape movies, and we'd rather do that than look at a landscape's video that is pushed down to fit vertically. Which is Instagram Instagram's feedback from the creators and viewers.
As a result, IGTV supports lying videos. As explained on the Instagram Blog, Instagram wants to "make IGTV a good content destination, no matter how shot, so creators can express themselves the way they want."
Instagram is still big enough to admit that it may have made the wrong decision just by supporting vertical videos at launch, saying: "We realize this is a evolution where IGTV started [but] we believe it is the right change for viewers and creators. " Finally, while Instagram still sees the value of vertical videos, it admits that "the landscape has its strength, especially when it comes to formats such as dance and sports that are high-motion and often have a handful of people in frame."

Better for Creators and Viewers
For creators, this simple change means that they have multiple options for shooting video for IGTV. And for viewers, support for landscape videos means that they no longer need to slip to see a landscape video presented vertically.
