Let me ask you a question …
What sets a good iPhone picture from a great masterpiece?
Let me give you a hint … When you look at the photos of the best iPhone photographers, for some reason they don't look exactly like the pictures taken by the iPhone.
Maybe colors in your photos look different. Maybe they don't create the same kind of mood or emotion. Or maybe they just don't do the kind of visual impact you want them to do.
And honestly I'm not surprised. Because not long ago I felt exactly the same way.
You see, I didn't always drive the world's largest iPhone shooting site with over a million monthly readers. And not long ago, I struggle to get an impact on my photos.
And I really couldn't understand why.
Of course, not all my photos were great again then. Honestly, not all of them are good today.
But some of them were pretty good. And I'm still proud to look back at these pictures today.
But even my best pictures failed to make the kind of influence I wanted them to do …
When I started interviewing the best iPhone photographers in the world, I was really surprised that 99% of the photos they publish do not come directly from the iPhone camera.
Of course, they often take good pictures to begin with.
But their photos will never be complete without editing that was done afterwards.
When you look at the best photographer's work, you never just look at their photos. You look at the combination of the original image AND careful editing.
And when editing, I don't mean to use a quick filter on Instagram or in any other novice app.
What I mean is serious photo editing. This means that you fine-tune your photos carefully to help them achieve a stronger visual effect while maintaining the original image quality.
If you're good at editing, you can improve even your best iPhone photos in minutes.
But if you don't edit your photos, they never look as good as they should. Here's why …
Move the slider over to compare the original and edited version of this image.
But why would Apple do that?
Well, it actually makes sense if you think about it …
The iPhone camera needs to work well with different lights, different colors, different subjects and even different photographic genres. It doesn't know what kind of picture you're trying to take.
Since it must work well under such different conditions, it gives you an average image that will most likely work for many different purposes. And it goes well most of the time.
But the iPhone camera will almost never give you amazing results without editing.
Let me show you what I mean by an example …
This photo was taken on an early spring day in Yellowstone National Park. The light was soft and soft. The turquoise thermal water stood out against the white snow-covered landscape.
But unfortunately this is not what you see in this picture.
This image has a bluish tint, making the snow blue. There is virtually no contrast between the thermal water and the blue sky. The composition is not strong. The horizon is not right …
But all these issues can easily be solved in a quick 3-minute photo editing session!
Now this picture is much closer to how this place felt in real life. It is also more beautiful.
Of course, this is just an example. Not all your photos have problems like this.
But the truth is that …
Your photos will Never See
Perfectly straight from the camera
And it is true if you are using your iPhone or an expensive DSLR camera.
Let me show you this great iPhone picture I took in the Grand Canyon last year …
I think it's a great picture. It is sharp and well composed. And the evening light is amazing.
Although the original is great, the edited version looks even better! The colors are much stronger and the shadows are deeper. The setting sun on the canyon walls stands out much more.
And if you look closely, you can see that the canyon walls now have much more detail.
It only took me 3 minutes to dramatically improve this image with just one editing app.
And while the original image was great, the edited version looks so much better!
But unfortunately it is not what happens when most people start editing …
Most iPhone photographers completely
Ruin their photos through editing
The last time I checked there were 50,000 image slots on the App Store.
The availability of cheap and free editing programs comes with a cost … And it's not pretty.
I hate to say this, but most people completely ruin their photos with editing programs. Just because you can add powerful effects to your photos doesn't guarantee that your photos are getting better.
Facebook and Instagram are flooded with heavily edited images with questionable aesthetics.
These changes are usually made so bad that they dramatically reduce the quality of the image.
This is something I hear all the time … Someone makes an edit that looks good on the iPhone screen, but when they look at the same image on the computer, it's a total mess.
And honestly most iPhone photographers don't even know what they're doing wrong …
You probably saw portrait edits like this on magazine covers. Now you can also use the exact same technique on the iPhone ̵
So how can you make sense without this?
I'm good at technology. But it still took me years to fully understand image editing.
And this was not just a hobby. I worked full time to grow iPhone Photography School.
So unless you are a computer user, it will probably take you years of hard work to get really good at photo editing. That was what I had to do, and finally it worked for me.
But you should not spend hours and hours trying to figure out image processing on your own.
Your time is better spent elsewhere, for example with your family or taking more pictures.
So why spend countless hours trying to figure out photo editing on your own?
There is a simpler and smarter way to learn everything …
