The way back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s when I created websites on a relatively frequent basis, the view of online security was a little different than it is today.
Yes, you hardened access to your server and tried to write your code as closely as possible, but unless you were a huge organization or processed credit card details, you did not bother to implement secure HTTP connections, mostly because you got a certificate was often a pain and costs you money.
