So Apple did not fail me as much as I thought they would. The second Apple Watch order I placed with them after they canceled the first one arrived on Monday, rather than in mid-November as they anticipated. Not too bad, I guess, especially since I got a free sports loop for my problems. Time for the clock from BestBuy to return to the store.
Speaking of bands, while I really like the Nike Purple Pulse Sport Loop that came out last week before the new watch, I love the Baltic Blue Leather Link band that came with the other Apple Watch that came out.
I’ve never tried or owned any of Apple’s leather straps before, so this one was new to me. The dark blue match is perfect with stainless steel in a gold finish, and the leather both looks and feels pretty good. Leather “links” also give the band a unique and interesting look.
Like the Sport Loop, my favorite part of Leather Link is how easy it is to get a nice fit. Leather Link is different in that it is divided into the more traditional two halves you get with straps in older style. However, Leather Link is magnetic, which makes it much easier to place than old-school leather straps.
I have found it to be as comfortable as the Sport Loop, and it is quite impressive.
The Leather Link band made a very positive impression, but the battery life in Series 6 has been the most pleasant surprise in recent days. My Series 5 would make it through one day, even running the watchOS 7 beta in recent months. However, not much came of it. I routinely found myself with between 10-20% left at the end of each night.
The new Series 6 has finished every day with 50% or better battery life with the same usage pattern. It’s significantly better performance than I ever got with 5, even fresh out of the box new. It seems to always appear on the screen, at least in my experience, and it seems that the new series 6 processor makes a real difference in terms of efficiency.
The most remarkable thing about this level of battery life is that it makes the use of sleep tracking much easier. While watchOS 7 has a built-in reminder to charge in the evening to prepare you to use this new feature, it still does not work well if the battery is low and you spend over an hour charging. There has been no problem with the Series 6. I only need to charge 50%, and it also has fast charging, so it only takes about 30 minutes to fill it overnight.
The performance of the Sleep Tracking battery is also very impressive. I have used it 3 of the last four nights and had 95% battery left every morning. Remember now that I only sleep around 5 hours a night (I know, I know. Much less than I should). But all aside, the better battery life, charging and performance make sleep tracking easier to use for anyone who wants to.
Sleep Tracking was not a big selling point for me, but since there are no problems doing it now, I will probably stick to it. However, I know that this is a very important feature for some users. If you’re one of those people, I suggest you take a long, hard look at the Apple Watch Series 6. It will make consistent sleep tracking much easier than any other Apple Watch model.
