Michael Tsai – Blog – Finder shows incorrect folder sizes

Lloyd Chambers:

Usually if I see a byte folder, I just delete it from the habit. It's a habit I have to unlearn: what if there was only one folder among many, and Get Info also shows zero byte … hard to not just destroy the case.

This error is especially serious on hard drives (because they are slower) and when there is disk I / O happening. You can wait a good time to see some view of the size. Why can't it just say "calculation …"? Because it eventually seems to get it right (though I'm not sure).

I haven't seen null byte folders, but I've seen many wrong folder sizes since updating to macOS 1

0.14. For example, a folder of images was shown as about 10 GB instead of 100 GB. All of their baby blankets had undervalued sizes as well. Nevertheless, they have added up to more than the size shown for the parent folder. This persists for several days. It happens on the iMac's built-in Apple SSD, so there should be no third-party software or hardware to blame.

Bug Finder macOS 10.14 Mojave
