Michael Tsai – Blog – iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro

iPhone 12 (MacRumors, event, Hacker News):

Apple today introduced the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini with 5G technology, and ushered in a new era for the world’s best smartphone. The redesigned iPhone 12 models feature expansive edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays for a brighter, more immersive viewing experience and a new Ceramic Shield front cover, giving the biggest leap in durability ever on the iPhone. The Apple-designed A14 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone, drives every experience on the iPhone 12, and combined with an advanced dual-camera system, provides meaningful new computational photography features and video of the highest quality in a smartphone. iPhone 1

2 models also introduce MagSafe, offering powerful wireless charging and a brand new ecosystem with accessories that can be easily attached to the iPhone.

iPhone 12 Pro (MacRumors):

The Apple-designed A14 Bionic chip, the fastest chip in a smartphone, powers impressive computing photography features, including the all-new Apple ProRAW for more creative control in photos, enabling the first end-to-end Dolby Vision video experience, up to 60 photos per second. The newly created pro camera systems include an expansive Ultra Wide camera, an even longer focal length telephoto camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max and new Wide cameras for capturing beautiful, professional-quality photos and video in bright and dim environments. iPhone 12 Pro models also introduce a new LiDAR scanner for immersive augmented reality (AR) experiences[…]

First I love the return of the flat sides, last available on a flagship phone in 2013. This will make it more comfortable to hold without a case.

I’m happy to see the mini, although I’ve in doubt about the battery life and adjustment to a smaller screen. These days, all the software is designed for larger screens. I wish it was available with the Pro camera. Compared to the iPhone 5s, the iPhone 12 mini is 0.31 inches taller, 0.22 inches wider, 0.01 inches thinner and 0.81 grams heavier.

I’m disappointed with the screen resolution of the new phones. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is way too big for me to carry, and all the other models show less on the screen than the iPhone XR I currently use. This reduction is greater than the increase that Apple spied on between the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro. I would rather have a higher resolution than OLED.

iPhone model Width Height
5s / SE 320 points 568 points
12 mini 360 points 780 points
8 / SE 2/11 Pro 375 points 667 points
12/12 Pro 390 points 844 points
XR / 11/11 Pro Max 414 points 896 points
12 Pro Max 428 points 926 points

Other thoughts:

  • Does the Ceramic Shield screen scratch less? I never drop my phone, but recent iPhones seem to itch more than before. I would rather Apple optimize it.

  • It is not clear to me if the iPhone 12 Pro camera is much better than the iPhone 12. Are the benefits of LiDAR autofocus just too little light? Does faster autofocus mean that the camera will be ready to take a picture sooner or that it will be less blurred?

  • Other than that, the benefits of the Pro seem slim. It is heavier, and the rear glass may be less durable, although it may be more gripping than metal.

  • How fast is A14 for regular tasks? Apple says it is “up to 50% faster CPU and GPU than any other smartphone chip.” But this is against other brands, not A13. Earlier, Apple said that the A14 was 40% faster than the A12 two generations ago.

  • Unfortunately, there is no touch ID in the power button. The iPhone SE is still the only mask-friendly iPhone.

  • The non-Pro iPhone 12 gets a price increase if you do not use AT&T or Verizon. (It also includes less in the box.)

  • I was excited to see $ 699 on the slide, but for 256 GB unlocked, the prices are $ 879 (mini), $ 979 (12), $ 1,099 (12 Pro), $ 1,199 (12 Pro Max). My 128GB XR was $ 799 two years ago, but I’m now pushing the limits of that capacity.

Sebastiaan de With:

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro apparently have the same sensor as the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro.

For 12 (and 12 Pro): The main camera (“Wide”) lets in 27% more light thanks to a new lens with af / 1.6 aperture.

For the 12 Pro Max, however, you get a new sensor that is significantly larger with a faster (better) lens.

Smart HDR 3 now takes scenes apart to prevent it from getting slippery over faces and prevent noise in dark areas. Deep Fusion and Night Mode come to all lenses; probably due to the extra processing power of the A14 chip.
