Usually when you think of someone who takes over an Instagram account, you will probably imagine an attacker breaking in with an unearthed password or lurking the victim in Give up their credentials. But Instagram scammers have a different, sometimes more effective method: Just ask Instagram to transfer the account.
Scammers do this by creating fake companies and trademarks to convince Instagram that they should be the legitimate owner of a username in question, with scammers using "trademarks" for which the technique is known, to get hold of coveted, valuable handles, according to post and evidence of the process in action achieved by the motherboard. Scammers can then hold these handles as digital memorabilia, brag about their acquisitions, or resell them for profit in a thriving underground community.
