According to Ashley Stewart of Business Insider, Microsoft’s xCloud game streaming service would come to iOS in 2021 via a completely predictable twist:
Microsoft’s game manager Phil Spencer told employees at a meeting with all hands on Wednesday that the company plans to bring Game Pass to Apple’s iPhone and iPad, with a view to 2021 for the potential release of a “direct browser-based solution”, Business Insider has learned.
A browser-based solution is the same angle that Amazon takes to bring its game streaming service to iOS, and it circumvents the App Store restrictions for listing games as individual titles, as well as in-app purchases.
I have trouble believing that the browser-based solution will work as well as a native solution, but I guess we’ll see. The real question is whether Apple’s insistence on setting the rules the way they did ended up hurting it or Microsoft more?
