Detailed in a blog post, Microsoft said that in order to receive the latest features included with Office 365 / Office 2019 for Mac next month, users must run at least MacOS Sierra 10.12.
As of the update for Office 365 for Mac September 2018, MacOS 10.12 or later is required to update to the new version of the Office Client Apps for Mac and receive new functionalization updates.
The updates are scheduled to be released next month for Office 365 subscribers. Microsoft has not yet announced when it will release Office 2019 for Mac other than in the "second half of 2018."
New features that come to the latest Office revision include a new focus mode, morphs, new admin tools, and more. Microsoft says that users on MacOS 10.11 or earlier will still be supported, but will not get the new updates. No word yet if a purchased copy of Office 2019 for Mac will be available on MacOS versions before 10.12.
For individuals, Office 365 starts subscriptions from $ 7 / month or $ 70 / year. For reference, you can own a copy of Microsoft Office at $ 150.
