I must admit that I was skeptical when Beautyrest wanted to send me his Sleeptracker (199 $) . It looks like every hardware manufacturer is trying to sell a sleep tracking device, but they are all portable. Beautyrest has a different approach, perhaps because it is a mattress manufacturer or maybe it knows a little more about sleep than the average technology company. Beautyrest's offer is a sensor located under your mattress, adjusted with your pillow. It contains two sensors, so a few sleepers can be tracked separately. The sensor is supplied with 3M tape which can be used to secure the sensors in place. It makes it less portable, but I could only let the weight of my king size mattress keep the sensors in place without the tape.
When the sensors are in place, use the free companion app to track sleep. It's a bit of a setup process where you set your ideal sleep and wake up times, age, weight, etc., and then you're good to go. The app and service will send you daily reports that are quite sophisticated. You can see charts that show not only sleep duration, but also deep sleep, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep time and more. I was surprised at how accurate and detailed the reports were, with just a small one foot sensor under my head. But surely enough, I noticed when I woke up, in the middle of the night and in the morning and more. After repeated use, it marked trends and offered advice. I look forward to a good night's sleep and see my report in the morning! Beautyrest has managed to get married to sleep. And it's not dependent on wearing a watch or training track all night. You can't easily take Sleeptracker with you while traveling, but it shouldn't be a big deal for most users.
