Kids are on iPhones and iPads all the time, and often with earphones or headphones made for adults. The people at BuddyPhones specialize in child headsets. They have many models, wired and wireless, traditional and waterproof. I checked them out at CES and they gave me BuddyPhones Play ($ 49.99) to try.
The earpads have comfortable cushions suitable for children with smaller ears than adults. They are also sold in child-friendly colors such as pink, light blue, army green and yellow. Most importantly, they have volume limiting opportunities to protect the hearing of the little ones. In fact, you can set the volume level to 75 dB for toddlers, 85 dB for children or 94 dB for noisy environments like aircraft.
The Bluetooth wireless model has 14 hours of battery life, which is quite competitive. And when you can't or won't go wireless, they have a wired option, with a splitter option, so two can share the sound. Another kid-friendly feature is the set of fun stickers included! Many of us decorate our laptops with stickers, so why not our headphones? At $ 50 they are probably at the top end of what you can buy your kids, but you'll find them about $ 10 cheaper on Amazon.
