Self-healing screen detailed in new Apple patent for potential future foldable iPhones

A new patent describes a self-healing material that can make a foldable iPhone happen.

The patent application, published by the US Patent & Trademark Office on October 1, envisages a new type of display arrangement that can repair dents, scratches and “other imperfections”, all on its own.

According to the application – discovered by Apple patent – the new patent covers a screen that will be self-healing, so that it can hide small marks that can be picked up during normal use:

When using an electronic device, the screen cover layer of the electronic device may be scratched or dented. In order to improve the aesthetics of the electronic device, it may be desirable to minimize the presence of scratches and dents. To help reduce the number of dents, scratches or other imperfections in a screen cover layer, the screen cover layer may comprise a layer of self-healing material.

The patent application describes how damages can be minimized when and when they occur. The patent is entitled “Electronic devices with flexible screen covers” and explains how the screen can have a flexible cover layer:

The flexible part of the screen cover layer may be located between the first and second rigid parts of the screen cover layer. The screen cover layer can also contain a layer with self-healing properties. The layer of self-healing material may be formed over the entire screen cover layer or may only be formed in the flexible area of the screen cover layer. The screen cover layer may include a layer of elastomer in the flexible area of the screen cover layer for increased flexibility.

Furthermore, the pace of the self-healing process can be increased with “externally applied heat, light, electric current or other stimuli.” Apple suggests that the monitor consists of three parts, including two standard monitors, a fixed monitor and the rotating mechanism:

When using an electronic device, the screen cover layer of the electronic device may be scratched or dented. To improve the aesthetics of the electronic device, it may be desirable to minimize the presence of scratches and dents. To help reduce the number of dents, scratches or other imperfections in a screen cover layer, the screen cover layer may comprise a layer of self-healing material.

The function sounds almost too good to be true, and the document probably does not go much into how it can be achieved. However, the fact that Apple is looking at a solution to the curse of fragile smartphone screens is promising.
