Smart Home Gear: Eve Light Strip Review

Thanks to the simplicity and the breakthrough of Apple's Homekit technology, the home automation market continues to grow rapidly with a range of product offerings. Elgato's eve line has been one of the most productive on the market, ranging from sockets and temperature monitors to smoke alarms and lighting solutions. A recent addition to Eva's growing product catalog is Eve Light Strip (from $ 79.95).

Installing the light strip behind my PC desktop was easy thanks to the pre-loaded double-sided tape. I also attached the inverter cabinet which attaches to the power cable to the underside of the table via the two small strips with double-sided tape included in the package.

Pairing and using the light strip was even easier thanks to the simple Homekit QR code and the free Eve app user interface. It took me less than five minutes to unbox, hang up, turn on, pair and use the light strip. It has probably come a long way from just a few years ago when I bought light strips from online enthusiasts websites, hooked them up to a power supply and an Arduino connected to an Ethernet add-on to Network Shield, wrote Arduino sketches to manage network activity and a simple web service to turn on and off the light strip.

When integrated into your Homekit-enabled automation inventory, light strip control works either through the Eve app or Siri integration only. I really like the convenience of telling Siri to turn on or off the light strip when I want to put a floating data form. I can also trigger the light strip to turn on or off based on my location at a certain time of day, which is useful when I don't accidentally throw power when I'm not in the room. The one feature that the Eve light strip lacks is color cycling. Philips Hue and even my homemade hack allows colors to pulsate and shift for more dramatic light effects. I sometimes use such effects during parties, holidays and when I need to educate or just impress neophytes into the wider world of home-grown automation. Granted, this property is more show than practical feature, but it's still a cool way to emphasize to others that this is more than just an expensive strip of light.

Pros

  • Light and colorful lighting solution
  • Easy to install and use
  • zero duration

Cons

  • Exclusive operating with Apple Homekit network
  • Currently no support for dynamic color cycling

Final Judgment

Eve Light Strip offers fast, easy way to add light strip lighting to an Apple Homekit-controlled home automation setup. Although designed to work only with Apple products, it has benefits from Apple's design ethos of elegant ease of use. And unlike the Philips Hue light strip on the cross platform, the Eve strip does not need an expensive stand-alone hub to keep the power supply and hardwired to your network. Response time is also noticeably faster than the Hue option. If you are committed to an Apple-only home automation ecosystem and need a dynamic LED lighting situation to set a variety of moods in the rooms, the Elgato's Eve Light Strip installation and use of modern lighting make it easy and fun.
