Some 2020 iMac users experiencing screen errors are likely to be caused by AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT GPU

A handful of iMac users in 2020 are apparently having issues due to the included AMD GPU. A recent thread on the Apple Support Forums outlines that the AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT is the likely culprit in a display error that causes random lines to appear on the screen.

The latest 27-inch iMac can be equipped with the Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. It’s the best configuration offered by Apple, but it seems to cause display issues for users.

The original user in the App Support thread explains that their 2020 iMac will randomly display lines across the screen. The user originally thought that the lines could be caused by intensive workflows and high heat. However, further testing showed that this should not be the case:

I just received my new iMac and noticed that from time to time a line error appears on my screen. It̵

7;s completely random, I thought it was related to intensive work / heat, but sometimes, even when the computer is idle, I see the line on the screen.

The iMac is working fine, I ran all sorts of CPU / GPU references, and that’s fine, but from time to time I see this annoying line on my screen.

One user adds that the probable culprit in this problem upon further investigation is the aforementioned 5700 XT GPU. The overall performance of the iMac does not appear to be affected by this issue.

The same problem with the iMac 2020, already appeared during the first Mac setup and has been flashing randomly ever since. When you search through YouTube and google, it seems that this is a common problem with the 5700XT GPU that comes with it.

It is unclear how widespread this problem is, but keep in mind that the problem only affects the advanced GPU configuration. This probably means that a small subset of iMac users are affected, but ideally, Apple will run a solution quickly.

This is probably a software problem of some kind, related to the drivers required by the Radeon Pro 5700 XT. Hopefully, AMD and Apple can work quickly with a solution that can be pushed through software to affected users.

Are you using the 2020 iMac with 5700 XT GPU? Do you notice this problem? Let us know in the comments below.
