WhatsApp has become increasingly popular over the years. Even being owned by Facebook has not slowed down the messaging platform down. Can the advertisements shift into the app, change it? We find out the beginning of 2020.
During the annual Facebook Marketing Summit in the Netherlands, which happened this week, the social network confirmed that ads are coming to WhatsApp starting in 2020. No specific date was provided other than General so that it can be a way into next year before these ads show up.
The ads are called "Status Ads" and they will be part of what WhatsApp calls the Statuses. These are similar to the stories you find in Instagram. But unlike some ads on social networks, these ads will record the entire screen. You can see the picture at the top of this article, with the pictures taken by Olivier Ponteville by the digital marketing company Be Connect. These photos were then originally shared by Matt Navarra on Twitter.
These status ads will record the entire phone's screen, just as a WhatsApp status would. Instead of seeing the user's name at the top of the screen, you see the company's name at the top when the ad presents itself. If you like what you see and want to learn more about it, swipe up for more information.
Technically, the ads that come to WhatsApp are not a surprise to themselves. The social messaging service has already confirmed that these were coming. But seeing how they want to see and work, though, and knowing that they will come in 2020, paints a pretty clear picture.
These ads will be available to both iOS and Android WhatsApp users when they arrive sometime next year. Based on this slide show how these status ads look, what do you think? If you are a heavy WhatsApp user, will these ads force your use down a bit?
