One of the great early selling points for the Tesla Model S was free, unlimited access to the Tesla Supercharging network. Having been limited to referrals before it was fully accepted, free lifetime Supercharging is back for all new Tesla Model S and Model X.
Tesla has used unlimited Supercharging as an incentive before, offering it on used Model S and Model X inventory. In this case, the company could push buyers toward flagship products instead of Model 3.
It's an advantage that Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously described as "unsustainable," even though this latest decision suggests it makes business sense for more expensive models in the company's range. The company hopes that unlimited "fuel" will be an incentive for customers to choose the more expensive model, even though the cost of charging represents only a small fraction of the total cost of the car.
Tesla probably needs to increase Model S and X sales to at least the launch of Model Y, which, combined with Model 3, can provide enough volume and revenue to eventually provide significant upgrading of Model S / X .
