With new games released every week, some of them are so good they deserve a place in this list.

With this in mind, we have updated this list to add the critically acclaimed indians, Cuphead, Two Point Hospital and RimWorld, but also the lesser known (but good) CrossCode and Farm Together. Life is also strange: Before storm and distance were moved from "Coming Soon" to "Released".

But not everyone was good news. We had to remove Insurgency: Sandstorm, The Wolf Among Us 2, Fortnite: Save the world and we're happy few when they were all pushed to 2019.

The Best Mac Games in 2018: Our Top Games

Rise Off Tomb Raider

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Feral Interactive

Metascore: 86

Lara Croft has risen. Again. The first Tomb Raider reboot from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics was brought to Mac in 2014 by the good people of Feral Interactive, and they have done the same with Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 years of celebration.

This sequel sends Lara to some of the more exotic places on earth, including ruins in Syria and the frozen mountains of Siberia. Given, Lara now makes more killing and less … you know … the grave raiding than long-term fans would expect, but everything comes together for a typical exciting experience.

How to use weapons and tools acquired throughout the game is Totally Up to you, give a sense of freedom when you hunt for supplies, eliminate enemies and uncover the secrets and treasures of the lush surroundings.

This lushness comes at a hefty price, but the system requirements will push your Mac to the limits. You can check the performance assessment for all references and results. If your Mac is up to the task, you will also be rewarded with all the game's DLC in this package. It includes four additional challenges, endurance mode (with co-op games), multiple difficulty settings and more. Get up

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Obsidian Entertainment

Metascore: 88

] This game is a direct sequel to Pillars of Eternity RPG, not the same name Deadfire Pack DLC released in 2017. It's confusing, we know, be here to put things right.

In the Standalone Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, you'll be back as a janitor, a person who can read the memories of others and even the memories of their past lives. This gives you incredible power, but it also means you have amazing enemies. In this particular case, it is Eothas, the god of light and rebirth. It sounds good, but Eothas attacks your high castle and leaves you dead, so it's up to you to travel to Deadfire to confront Eothas for the answer … or revenge. We know when we get there.

I said that Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a stand-alone game, but if you played through the first PoE, your actions in that game will transfer to this sequel. If not, summer is right in front and you have time to play through both of them.

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Hi-Rez Studios

Metascore: 83

This team – based shooter just left Steam Early Access, and it made 25+ million players strong. It's free to play, even if there are things to buy in the game, anything you can buy can also be bought by playing. Finally.

An example of this is the game's Champions, including "sharpshooting people, mech-riding goblins, mysterious alders and jetpack-clad dragons", all of which can be customized with a tire building system. You can buy these in combat or pay up front to unlock all current and future champions (new ones are added regularly).

Originally seen as an Overwatch clone that can be played for free, Paladins has become so much more. The game has good graphics, good support and excellent gameplay. Teamwork is the key to victory, so choose your Champion wisely and set up a diverse team that communicates well.

Paladins will also serve as a good practice for Paladins: Battlegrounds, an upcoming online game royal game that can be played solo, with a teammate, or in groups of four. It changes royal formula with celebrations, epic objects that provide survival bonuses and cards spread on the battlefield to upgrade your abilities.

Oh, and you become a chicken when you die. So, look forward to it, I guess.

Into the Breach

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Subset Games

Metascore: 90

This tactical RPG from developers of FTL: Faster Than Light was released for Windows in February, and now Mac players can finally enjoy it too.

Presented with retro graphics, Into the Breach initially looks like your typical turn-based battle game based on an isometric grid. However, the game has a very unique twist. As a reaction to films like Pacific Rim and Man of Steel, where nobody cares that the entire town is being destroyed because at least the good guys won, Into the Breach acts to defeat enemies while protecting the surrounding structures.

The fighting itself is led between giant mechs and daikaiju (which I also want to say is inspired by the Pacific, except that such kinds have been well-behaved before then). Celebrating your enemies is also not always the point, sometimes enough to sacrifice a device to maintain position or defend another from attack, like in a chess game.

And when it comes to chess, players' assessments often point to the game's difficulties. You have been warned.

Some games get extensions and so are The World of Warcraft launched its seventh expansion in the form of Battle of Azeroth on August 13th. This MMORPG from Blizzard Entertainment has been playing tension since 2004, and obviously shows no signs of slowing down.

It's all good news for the game's fast-paced fan base, as they can now raise the level caps to 120, gain access to new dungeons, and are able to increase their boot space beyond 16 for the first time since the game's release. The battle against Azeroth also broke new allied races, parties, pets and much more.

In the context of history, a new conflict between the Alliance and Horde has broken out after the events of Legion (the previous expansion) and the two factiones must travel to the human nation of Kul Tiras and the magic of Zandalar to recruit new allies to their case.

The Azeroth battle is available in standard digital deluxe and collector edition packages, so find out your point of interest (and investment) and start fighting. This war will not solve itself, you know.

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Studio MDHR

Metascore: 88

Studio MDHR Achieved Something unique with their accurate rendering of old-fashioned comics. This really looks like a 1930s cartoon, with many characters you can find something familiar. The original jazz recordings help to recreate the feel of early comics.

Of course, graphics do not always sell video games, so it's good that the game in Cuphead is flawless and lots of fun. You play as Cuphead or Mugman (or both via local multiplayer) in an arcade game that changes styles between platforms, shmups, runners and any blend thereof when exploring a variety of environments. With great features to learn, secrets to uncover and weapons to acquire and use, there is plenty of madness to be had when trying to repay the debt to the devil.

No wonder, Cuphead became an instant indulgence when it was released for Windows, and we're sure it's now available for MacOS.

MacOS Developer: Ludeon Studios

Metascore: NA

It's hard to survive on distant worlds. It's even more difficult when you're one of three survivors in a shipwreck. But such is the start of RimWorld, a sci-fi colony sim from Ludeon Studios. As your colony grows over forests, deserts, tundra and more, you must manage almost every resource of your well-being: mood, wounds, illnesses, addictions, relationships and more.

Of course there is also danger. In order to survive, you must ward off pirates, animals, giant insects and even old killers (why do developers of drapers know nothing about planned obsolescence?). Good news, though … at least you've got the technology to replace wounded limbs and organs with prostheses, bionics or biological parts harvested from those you could not save.

You are not alone. There are many options for trade and / or conquest, refugees to beat or sell to slavery, weapons to detect and handle, and a discreet AI tutor to help you get started. And if you prefer animal feeders, you can tam and train pets for companionship, farming and / or protection. There is a lot to do, but it's life at RimWorld.

Dead Cells

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Motion Twin

Metascore: 89

Remember when you Castlevania played and thought, "Man, would not this game be great if you had to start right from the beginning every time you died?" No? Well, anyway, that's what you get to do with Dead Cells, a game that shows the rage of its features.

Dead Cells is about exploration of progress and acquiring the ability to do it. The skills you unlock when examining the procedurally generated levels are permanent, so you can keep them even when you die. These skills allow you to reach new areas every time you go out, so you can dig deeper into the game every time you play.

The action is presented in a 2D retro-inspired world that will make fans of classic Castlevania and Metroid feel at home. Combat will also be known, from the platform fighting against the epic bosses. But do not think Dead Cells is another retro-rejection; It's very much their own game, with the smooth animation and tight controls one could expect from a modern action title.

Remember, though; As we said earlier, the rage ends are a function.

MacOS Developer: Two Point Studios

Metascore: 84

Have you ever seen an episode of Grays anatomy and thought, "I could do a better job of running a hospital than they do." Well, here's your chance, albeit with more focus on business and less on … well you know.

Your task here is to build hospitals from scratch, making it the most attractive place for the citizens of Two Point County to come to cure what makes them easier. Trouble is what citizens in Two Point County differ from what you see in a regular hospital. Have you studied cure for Cubism yet? Here you must. You also need to hire and train your employees, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the system, take out loans to finance research and expansion, and of course deal with doctors and nurses who are often more difficult than patients. All this to prevent the next lethal pandemic.

Remember that this is modern medicine, and your hospital is as much for shareholders as for patients. As the description says, you must "strive to make money (and hopefully save some people along the way)."

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Refract Studios

Metascore: NA

If you've heard of The game Distance from developer Refract, may be because it has been in Steam Early Access since December 2014! And if you have been waiting for a full edition, you're lucky, since Distance is finally out.

If you have not heard of Distance, take a look (especially if you are a racing fan). This futuristic race is like no-one else you've seen, replaced running on track with a straight burn to the end and giving you a car that can drive on the walls of the course's Tron-like structures. There is so much about parkour as it is about driving.

Whether you drive alone against the clock in adventure mode, against "ghosts" in arcade mode to take over leaderboards or against others (up to 12 online or 2 to 4 in local split screen) in the different multiplayer modes, Distance looks at to give a very atmospheric adrenaline rush. And thanks to its random spelling, you will not be tired of your courses any time soon. It even has a level editor with over 2500 user-created levels ready to go. If only the local roadworks could be so effective.

Life is Weird: Before the Storm

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Deck Nine Games

Metascore: 77 [19659149] Set three years before the events of the first entry in the critically acclaimed and BAFTA award winning adventure game, before Stormen puts us in the shoes of the rebel Chloe Price, as she forms an unlikely relationship with popular Rachel Amber. The two young women must confront each other's demons and overcome them, and your decisions will affect how this happens.

Each choice you make leads to consequences in the game and leads to more possible endings. As if you tap into a teenager's dream, in-game conversations come with a backtalk mode that lets you use Sass to come and you can even put your stamp on the game via custom graffiti.

But don & # 39; I think from my description that life is strange: before the storm is about teenage anxiety and rebellion. This story and these signs have incredible depth and will resonate with anyone who has ever felt it … well, that life is strange.

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Stoic

] Metascore: 82 [19659157] I imagine that there are readers who visited this page just to make sure that we included The Banner Saga 3 and they are completely legitimate. This long-awaited game draws Stoic's award-winning Banner Saga series to an end, and the end is influenced very much by the choices you made when playing The Banner Saga 1 and 2.

For those who are not familiar with the series, The Banner Saga is a turn-based RPG with a story centered around a lorry that tries to survive in difficult environments. Strategic decisions affect the progress of history; Even the characters chosen for battle can have permanent and major consequences.

Banner Saga 3 introduces deeper strategic battle along with new playable characters, enemies, upgrade options and more. It also retains hand painted works of art and difficult combat grids of its predecessors. Now that the game is released, we hope you had time to play through the first two Banner Saga games. A complete war story: Thrones of Britannia

] Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Creative Assembly

Metascore: 75

Here's another opportunity to rewrite the future of modern Britain and have fun doing it.

Thrones of Britannia is a standalone Total War game starting in year 878. AD Combine turn-based strategy with real-time matches known to the franchise, Thrones of Britannia has the most detailed Total War map to date.

You can direct any of the ten available factiones – including Anglo-Saxon, Gaelic clans, Welsh tribes or Viking builders – which provide a lot of playability to the game. However, it's not about the nuances of leading your faction into battle. You must also unite (and break) alliances, manage and protect your settlements, train your soldiers, and develop the right strategy for your matches. Being able to adapt quickly when these strategies fall apart will also be a great help.

Total wars are among the most popular franchises available for Mac today, and with Thrones of Britannia, Feral Interactive has given us one of the most engaging entries yet.

MacOS Developer: Unknown Worlds

Metascore: 87

Subnautics to find examiners underwater world to a foreign planet. Why? Because you crashed there, and now you need to collect resources to survive. It's you against time and environment, but it's a great environment!

The layout of Subnautica is very cool. Basically, you will only be able to explore the immediate area around your life law. But when you collect resources and develop equipment, you can venture into deeper and more dangerous (and impressive) rooms for rare items. You need to make everything from simple knives for self-defense to complicated watercraft for more efficient exploration. Accessing areas that you could only see from a distance before prove to be quite rewarding both through the implementation itself and through what you could find there.

Even better, deeper exploration is also based on the game, and provides a convincing story that is often lost in survival titles like this. It's a survival game that deals more about science and less about customs and it's quite engrossing. You can not find another game that perfectly balances calm, aquatic exploration with the stresses of underwater survival.

Mac Release Date: 2018

MacOS Developer: Radical Fish Games

Metascore: 85

The problem with many " retro-inspired "video games are that they play as retro video games. And while there is a certain charm for that, there is also a reason that we have continued to move beyond 16-bit NES style graphics and gameplay.

The problem is long life, but CrossCode provides enough. A 2D-action RPG in the core, CrossCode has 30 to 80 hours of playing time, and it does not do it by repeating items or by encouraging speed. Rather, it only offers so much content. The massive world offers many hidden secrets to finding and over 100 missions to take on. Between all this you need to explore seven widespread dungeons and take over 120 enemies including more than 30 cheers.

The slim combat system is also a highlight and encourages you to master over 90 martial arts. Now it was a while ago and I did not play anything, but I can not remember a single NES era game offered so much content and diversity. Stylized graphics, fast match, Zelda-style puzzles, lots of content … that's the kind of retro we can come across.

Has any fictional serial order been received A lot of gaming like Jason Vorhees? Killer Puzzle marks fourth video game based on the horror icon and may be one of the most bizarre yet.

Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle is played on a small isometric game board. You push Jason around the table in an attempt to kill everyone in the fewer moves while avoiding various dangers. In other words, it's smart enough to know that movie players always took Jason's side in relation to the idiot teenagers. And with over 100 levels to play, it's a terrible mass of teens to kill.

Fans of the series get a kick out of references to the movies, including outfits from the movies and the levels taking place in Manhattan and outer spaces. And if you like Friday the 13th of the gore … well, it's alright, albeit in comic strip.

Rest a massive multiplayer action RPG where you want to explore, collect resources, build a base, make friends and enemies. People should work together to survive, but to a great extent only end up killing each other. You know how game communities are.

The root point of the rust is just to do all it takes to survive its apocalyptic world. You start with practically nothing and must scavenge for necessities of survival: food, shelter, fire and (of course) weapons. Think Ark: Survival Evolved, without the dinosaurs.

A beautiful game with over 160,000 positive Steam User reviews (75% recently, 80% overall), the biggest complaint is about a sometimes toxic community that makes it difficult for newcomers. Yes, you can create alliances to help you along, but those easily break down leaving you all alone again, likely about to die. Of course, that’s just part of the fun, and eventually, you get to drive an army tank.

This 2D platformer from the developers of the classic TowerFall has been so well-received we want to make sure you didn’t miss it.

Celeste centers around a young girl named Madeline and her adventure to the top of Celeste Mountain. She’ll meet many personable characters in her travels, and will learn more about herself along the way. The touching narrative is actually one of the highlights of the game, providing more character development and incentive than we’re used to seeing from platformers.

We also see increased difficulty. Celeste presents quite the challenge, much like the old-school 2D platformers on which it’s based. There are 700+ screens to beat and secrets to unlock (including “Brutal B-side chapters…built for only the bravest mountaineers”), and dying is just part of the process. You’ll respawn right away, so no backtracking is necessary. Jump, dash, climb, die, jump, dash, climb, advance. See if you don’t get hooked.

See, this is what I like. When we started to put this list together, Battletech was in the coming soon section. Now that we’ve published, it’s been moved to “already out.” Go grab it while you’re waiting for some of the others to be released.

Why? Because it’s BattleTech and it comes to us from Jordan Weisman (the original BattleTech/MechWarrior creator) and the developers of the Shadowrun Returns series. Here, the action takes place in the distant future of a galaxy in perpetual war. These wars are now fought with massive, mechanical combat vehicles, which instantly makes everything much cooler.

You command your own mercenary squad of combatants, which involves equipping and protecting your base, upgrading your mechs, hiring new mercenaries, and (of course) combat. It’s up to you to position over 30 BattleMechs in the field, using the terrain and special skills of your squad members to gain the upper hand.

Frostpunk Mac games 2018 featured

You think steam is the only punk out there? No. Frost has gone punk, too…on Windows, at least. The Mac Frostpunk scene will have to wait a bit longer.

From the creators of This War of Mine, Frostpunk is a city-building survival game set in a late 1880s where rampant snowstorms and frost led to the death of millions. You are amongst of a group of survivors—workers and engineers—who managed to locate a heat generator and are using to build a new city. You’ll need to harvest coal, wood, steel and food in this harsh environment in order to survive, but of course politics have to come along and make everything even more difficult.

You can use laws to force the workers to stay on the job, but we all know how well that tends to go over. On the other hand, something has to keep the workers motivated or you could quickly run out of the precious materials needed to keep the city afloat.

Work on the macOS version of Frostpunk is in progress, and we hope to have an update soon as to when Mac gamers can bundle up and get to work in an effort to save humanity from the elements.

Total War: Warhammer 2

“Defend your world. Destroy theirs.” That’s pretty much all you need for a successful game setup, right? But if you’re at all familiar with the Total War franchise, you know the game goes, much deeper than that.

Total War: Warhammer 2 is coming to macOS, once again combining the Total War and Warhammer franchises into an epic clash of turn-based campaigns and real-time tactical battles. Players will be able to join the ranks of the Dark Elves, High Elves, Lizardmen or Skaven, then take control of thousands of soldiers, level-up legendary heroes, make strategic diplomatic decisions and more across hundreds of hours of single and multiplayer gameplay.

Will you be able to perform the powerful arcane rituals necessary to stabilize the Great Vortex, or will you choose to disrupt it? No need to decide, really, as you’ll have plenty of time and nearly unlimited playthroughs to do both…until Total War: Warhammer 3 comes out, anyway.

Release date: Fall 2018.

Griftlands Mac download

This rather unique sci-fi RPG is coming to us from Klei Entertainment, the company that brought us Don’t Starve, Oxygen Not Included, and Shank, among others. That alone makes it worth your interest, but Griftlands has plenty more to consider.

As is implied by the title, Griftlands will have you negotiating money, loyalty and your own morality as you seek to make your fortune within the game’s flowing economy. A full cast of characters are available for you to control and set up as companions. These characters will also engage in turn-based combat where the goal is to subdue, not kill, them. Kind of a refreshing approach these days, really.

As the game’s designer, Kevin Forbes, stated in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, “Individual fights are designed to be short and impactful. Morale and NPC personality effects factor in heavily – many fights are not to the death, but rather until one side surrenders. Killing people can lead to mechanical repercussions down the road, and NPCs remember what you did to them in the past.

We’re excited to learn more about Griftlands as we get closer to release, and will certainly keep you posted.

Oxygen Not Included

Oxygen Not Included

Also in Early Access (but currently available for Mac), Oxygen Not Included is expected to get its official release this year. I’d suggest you start stocking up on oxygen now, as you’re going to need it.

That’s because this sim is set in an oxygen-depleted space colony. Unlike with similar games, you’re not landing on a new planet to colonize it. Rather, you’re living deep inside an asteroid and dealing with all the hazards and stresses such a life would provide. You’ll need to develop the technology to combat hostile aliens, continue to develop infrastructure, keep the colonists happy and sane, and—as is implied by the title—continue to provide the resources necessary for survival.

With some careful planning (and a little luck), you may just help your colony thrive in this hostile environment. If not…well, there are plenty of other asteroids out there in which you can try again.

Phoenix Point
Phoenix Point Mac games 2018 pick

Phoenix Point

A new strategy game from the creators of XCOM. That’s pretty much all we needed to hear to add this game to our radar. Why? Because this means we can expect strategic, turn-based gameplay as we battle hordes of terrifying monsters.

By 2047, the human race is almost completely wiped out by alien mutagens and some typically bad sciencing. What remains of humanity is scattered about in small factions across the planet, each with its own ideology and secrets. You, on the other hand, are part of the Phoenix Project, a worldwide organization designed to be activated when the world is in peril, which apparently missed the phone call. You have no contact with the organization’s other cells, and you need to find out what happened to them.

Like XCOM before it, Phoenix Point will offer tons of customization through soldier development and weapon research/modification. Battles will take place in procedural, destructive environments spread across a large number of diverse missions.

Backer builds (pre-alpha) are available now, allowing you to get some practice in before the game’s official Mac release later this year alongside the Windows and Linux versions.

Release date: Q4 2018.

Artifact Mac featured

This game from designer Richard Garfield and developer Valve promises to offer “… the deepest gameplay and the highest-fidelity experience ever seen in a trading card game.” That’s a pretty tall boast, but it certainly does have the creative power to back it up.

When it’s released later this year, Artifact will come with more than 280 cards to start, including 44 heroes to collect and use in its strategic battles. We don’t know too much else about Artifact at this point, except that it’s based on Valve’s MOBA Dota 2 and that gameplay will be lane-based (like in Hearthstone) and will involve some pretty deep mechanics for strategy enthusiasts.

Valve is heavily pushing the community aspects, too, as players will be able to buy and sell cards through the Steam Community Marketplace and participate in competitive events. In addition, Artifact will be supported through ongoing expansions and feature updates.

In other words, if you’re at all into strategic trading card games, mark the date below on your calendar.

Release date: November 28, 2018.

Rise of Industry
Rise of Industry Mac download

Rise of Industry

This business tycoon game from developer Dapper Penguin Studios would already be available to us in Early Access were it not for a MacOS Unity bug. We’re hoping that situation is quickly resolved because how can an industry rise without involving Apple?

As you’ve likely gleaned from the title, Rise of Industry presents you with an initial investment and some property that’s shared with AI controlled towns and villages. It’s up to you, then, to supply goods and services to these villages in an effort to help your chosen industry rise.

Gameplay is broken into modes: career (you must specialize in a certain industry) and sandbox (do what you want). In either mode, you’ll have to deal with things like permits, supply and demand, trade, and the very worst aspect of running a business: customers.

A free demo version is available on Windows and Linux, so we expect the Mac version to get the same treatment once the Unit bug is ironed out. Until then, industry will have to rise without us.

Fortnite Mac battle royale

Believe it or not, Fortnite Battle Royale is just one mode in the Fornite package, the other being Save the World. Battle Royale was released as a separate free-to-play title, and it now pretty much rules the planet (as well as the moon and I’m told Venus, Mars and a good chunk of Jupiter). Save the World is still out there, however, hoping to find love.

Unlike the PvP action of Battle Royale, Save the World is the co-op, sandbox survival mode of Fortnite. Billed by Tim Sweeney, Epic’s founder, as a cross between Minecraft and Left 4 Dead, Save the World tasks players with working together to explore the environment, scavenge materials, craft weapons, and build forts to help fight off waves of monsters. Of course, it’s all presented with the colorful, fun-loving, freestyle dancing attitude of Battle Royal.

Fortnite is available now via paid early-access, with the official release for all platforms scheduled for this year. Check it out when you’re done wasting your time fighting with your friends and ready to join up with them for something bigger…like saving the world.

Release date: Sometime in 2018.

Our Criteria

There are a lot of MacOS games coming out in 2018. A lot. Thus we got to be very selective in choosing which games made the list. So, how did we pull these particular games to the top? By focusing on these criteria:

Obviously, the game has to run natively on macOS; no Wine, Parallels or Bootcamp needed.

Confirmed Mac Version

No rumored compatibility. No “we’re looking into it”. We’ve actively engaged with the developers to get confirmation that macOS versions are in the works even if the details haven’t yet been announced elsewhere. If you see a game mentioned here, it’s because we know first hand that the developer is working on it.

Hype level

Here’s where we get more subjective, but each of these games has something very important going for it. It could be a much anticipated sequel to a popular Mac game, it could be the developer’s name/pedigree, or it could be that we just really like the concept. Regardless of the reason, we’re buying into the hype for each of these titles.

Wrapping Up

There’s an awful lot to consider here, we know, but that’s a good thing. Whether you’re hoping for a new entry in your favorite genre or looking to branch out into something different, the new Mac games for 2018 will give you plenty of options. Go ahead and get hyped for a few long-awaited sequels, get ready to dig into a few games that your Windows-using friends are already playing, or get something completely new when it becomes available.

Here at Mac Gamer HQ, we’ll be sure to let you know when these games finally come out, and we look forward to hearing what you think about them.

If you’re looking forward to a game that we didn’t cover here, be sure to let us know. We’re always on the lookout for the next big game!
