The UK will launch its Google & Apple API-based contact tracking app

The UK will launch its own contact tracking app with Google and the Apple API in Wales and the UK. The NHS COVID-19 tracking app launches on September 24th.

The NHS app will have similar distance-based contact tracking technology and can generate QR codes to increase engagement and awareness. Companies in the UK are asked to display the codes on posters, as well as create a handwritten register for individuals who do not have a mobile phone.

Early versions of the app were to be for the whole of the UK. However, it used a centralized tracking solution and was scrapped shortly after it was tested in May. The app is now powered by both Apple and the Google API, something Scotland already has in place.
