To set and use a different return address in macOS Mail

Need to change or enter a return email address in the macOS Mail app? It is easy.

With mail open …

  1. Click “Mail” at the top left of the screen.
  2. Select “Settings”
  3. Select the “Compose” tab
  4. Click “Automatically select best account”

Select the “from” address you want to be the default for all email replies

You see a list of email accounts. Select the one you want to be the default return email address.

That said, the Mail app is pretty smart and is pretty much reliable for linking the email address to a specific account, which is why I do not set up a specific return address in Mail.

When replying to an email, you can also choose a return email address other than the one associated with the account. Just click and hold the From field and a list of all your email addresses will appear. Choose the one you want.
