Although there are some very bad subscription models, there are also some very good that help support ongoing app development and basically make sure the app will still be around 5-20 years.
An example is the app I use to manage type 1 diabetes. I tried at least a dozen other programs of this type and they were all badly designed or not updated this year. When I found the one I've used since 2008 it was great. It cost $ 14, when there was a lot for an app at that time, and the developer had to switch to a subscription model (I think it's $ 12 / year) to support continued development and provide customer support, but the app is still strong 10+ years that are of immense value for me and many other diabetics.
